September 4, 2020

Dear Parents,

Summer is almost over and we at Saint Mary's are looking forward to another exciting year with our children in Faith Formation Classes. We will follow all guidelines set forth by the Diocese for in-person classes. This includes participants signing a COVID-19 waiver. A full explanation of all COVID-19 procedures will be sent to registered families.

Classes will begin Sunday, September 13, and meet from 10:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. We will offer both an in person and online opportunity for catechesis. Regardless of the chaos we are experiencing, we are still called to live our Faith and must lead our children to know and love God. Please understand that although the established plan may change, the importance of catechesis remains a priority and we as Catholic parents and guardians have a commitment to passionately share our understanding of the Roman Catholic Faith with our children.

All catechists, assistants and children are required to wear masks while on campus. The children will be required to use hand sanitizer on entry and exit from the classroom. Help us out by having your child use the bathroom before they come to FF. These are unprecedented times and we must all work together with empathy and a steadfast spirit to assure that our children are safely catechized.

Sacramental policy reminder:  Children preparing for First Holy Communion or Confirmation must attend, at the very minimum, TWO FULL YEARS of Faith Formation classes if they are not in our Catholic School system. This means a child who is to receive First Holy Communion in 2nd grade must have already completed the 1st grade class before moving on to the 2nd grade and the reception of the Sacrament. Similarly, a child preparing for Confirmation must have completed 6th/7th grade class before moving on to the 7th/8th grade class and the reception of Confirmation.

Teaching Touching Safety:  Every parish in the Diocese of Charleston is required to offer a “Teaching Touching Safety” class each year to all children registered in faith formation. As a parent/guardian, you have the right to choose whether your child participates in the TTS program. Information of this program can be found at tncrrg.virtus.org/touchingsafety/charleston.cfm.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at 843.270.5080 or by e-mail at formation@sma.church.

God bless,
